HIERARCHY

The little white church was located in a remote area on the outskirts of Mercy. It was a standard chapel with an arched doorway and a stained-glass window. There was a sign that read OPEN TO THE PUBLIC 24/7.

“This is an unusual location for a church,” I commented, stepping out of Victor’s convertible. “It’s so far out of town.”

“The chapel is a resting spot for travelers,” Victor informed me. “It’s the oldest chapel in Mercy.”

“Stop, Rest, Worship,” I said, reading a sign on the grassy road. “Why are we here?” I turned to face him.

“Do you know why mortals celebrate St. Gideon Day?”

“I was told that the festival is a celebration honoring an angel named Gideon.”

“In 1920, a high-ranking angel named Gideon was the first of our kind to make himself known to humans by showing a young boy his feathered wings. Consequently, he revealed the existence of angels and the mortals worshipped him as a god,” Victor explained. “The young boy grew up to be a priest and built this chapel in Gideon’s honor.”

We entered the chapel and the room was lit. There was a floor-to-ceiling cross and an angel mural. It appeared to be a shrine. The painting of the angel had large white feathered wings the length of its entire body. He had silver white hair and dark, stormy blue eyes. His eyes were mysteriously calm.

“Is that him—Gideon?” I asked.

Victor nodded. “He is depicted accurately, but his wings are much larger.”

The shrine table had four candles in metal taper holders, a single white feather, a small bowl of water, and an unlit incense stick in a wood holder burner.

“Is he a fallen angel like you?”

“No, he’s an angelic Lord. He is second in line to the throne.”

“What throne?”

Victor sat in the pew and I sat next to him. “Order of the Throne—the hierarchy of angels,” he said. “Seraphim are the highest angelic order, and they serve as heavenly protectors. They’re the first choir of angels before our Creator’s throne. Seraphim don’t have any physical form, but are made of iridescent light and wind, and they symbolize the glory of our Creator. Seraphim oversee the natural world. They control the sun, stars, and moon.”

I held my breath. A part of me, the practical-minded side, couldn’t fathom a word of what I was told. My first foster parents forced me to attend church every Sunday morning, but I wouldn’t consider myself a spiritual person. I read the scriptures when I was younger and I vaguely remember reading about angels, but I’ve always thought of it as a fable. I tried to wrap my head around what it all meant… this magic and heavenly world I couldn’t see.

“Cherubim rank after the Seraphim and are the second choir to the throne. There are six Cherubim; they make up a council and they regulate the duties of the lower angels. Cherubim can take any shape. They rarely visit earth and they keep human contact to a minimum. It’s extremely rare that they reveal themselves to mortals.
